Where will sessions take place?
Where will sessions take place?
Firstly I will carry out an initial assessment with your child. This would normally be one hour but could be shorter or longer depending on how in depth it needs to be. This can be done at your own home, or in your child's school or preschool.
Follow up therapy sessions can be arranged at your own home or in your child's school/ preschool. I am keen to work with education staff to provide informal training and to maximise carry-over of your child's targets. After observing therapy sessions and discussing the activities, Learning Support Assistants and Teaching Assistants are then able to repeat activities during the school week. This would obviously take place following agreement with your child's preschool or school.
As parents, you will also be encouraged to observe therapy sessions if taking place at home so that you are then able to repeat homework activities with your child. Extra practise in-between sessions is necessary in order to ensure that your child gets the full benefit from his or her therapy.
I completed my training at De Montfort University, Leicester and graduated in 1995. I started my first NHS post in Portsmouth in 1995. I have just under 20 years experience of working in the NHS and made the move to setting up in independent practise in May 2015. I am a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP) and registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).
My most recent NHS work involved visiting mainstream primary schools in the Aldershot and Farnborough area and a clinic for children with speech sound difficulties or dysfluency (stammering). Prior to this I also worked in a range of preschool clinics and preschools/ nurseries and an early years multi-disciplinary assessment unit. I also worked in an infant language resource and a special school for children with moderate learning difficulties, many of whom also had autistic spectrum disorder.
I am committed to my own continuing professional development and have specific training in the following areas:
* Nuffield Centre Dyspraxia Programme
* Training from the South Thames Cleft Service (cleft palate/ palatal anomalies/ nasal speech)
* Derbyshire Language Scheme
* Makaton signing
* Michael Palin Centre - Primary aged Children who Stammer

Location of sessions
I am based in Aldershot, Hampshire and happy to travel within a 10 mile radius. Longer distances can also be agreed but may include some re-imbursement of travel costs (see 'fees' below).
Initial assessments will generally be offered in your own home so your child can be assessed and observed in familiar surroundings. I would ask that you provide a quiet room to work in with a table, away from distractions such as the TV where possible. Follow up sessions will take place either at your home or in your child's school/ preschool.
Length and frequency of blocks of therapy
A standard block of therapy is 6 sessions, although shorter or longer blocks can be agreed. Your child can be reviewed after a break and a further block arranged if required.
A full written report can be provided at your request following an initial assessment or at the end of a block of therapy. An additional fee will be incurred for the time taken writing the report.
I provide sessions between 9.00 am and 4 pm. If you wish to discuss the possibility of arranging sessions outside these hours please contact me by email or telephone.
Role of the parent/ carer
It is expected that you are present during therapy sessions in order to observe the activities so that they can be repeated in-between appointments. If sessions take place in school or preschool then they will be observed and repeated by your child's Learning Support Assistant or Teaching Assistant. Please provide copies of any reports from other professionals to help the therapist understand your child's needs better, eg Educational Psychology, Occupational Therapy.
Sharing information with other professionals
It is in your child's best interest that I liaise with any other professionals involved. Therefore with your consent, reports and therapy aims will be shared accordingly. No information will be disclosed without your knowledge and consent.
It is particularly important that you let me know if your child has been assessed by another Speech and Language Therapist within the last 6 months so that formal assessments are not duplicated. If your child is involved with an NHS Speech and Language Therapist, I will inform them of my involvement and aim to work collaboratively.
Fees not only cover the contact time with you and your child but also liaison, record keeping, session planning and preparation of resources. All fees are agreed prior to the start of therapy. After initial assessment you will be able to decide whether or not you wish to go ahead with a block of therapy (assuming this is found to be appropriate).
Hourly rate: £70
1 hour initial assessment: £70
Assessment Report: £70
30 minute therapy session: £40
Additional charges will be made for:
- Attendance at annual reviews or other meetings
- Travel of more than 10 miles will be charged at 50p per mile
- Phone calls lasting longer than 15 minutes may be charged at therapist discretion in line with hourly
- Report writing - hourly rate charged pro rata
I accept payment by BACS, cheque or cash. Sessions should be paid for on the day of the appointment or in advance.
A reminder will be sent to you if your payment is late. If payment is not made after the reminder has been sent then sessions for your child will be suspended.
Receipts for payments can be given for initial assessments, reviews or therapy sessions on request.
All payments for assessment or therapy sessions will be referenced by your name and address in my accounts, rather than with your child's name.
A minimum of 24 hours is required for cancellations. Sessions cancelled by you after this time or sessions not attended will incur a charge of 50% of the arranged session fee. It is also your responsibility to inform me in advance if your child has an activity arranged in nursery/ school and they will be absent or not available (e.g. on a school trip).
If I am unwell or unable to attend a session I will offer a replacement one as soon as possible.
If you choose to withdraw your child from therapy at least a week's notice would be appreciated.
